Consult with your boat dealer to determine what your options are. Some boats can house either an I/O engine or an outboard engine, but not all boats are equipped for both. ![]() When you initially purchase your boat you will have to select and purchase an engine as well. The boat on the left has an inboard or sterndrive motor and the boat on the right has an outboard motor. An inboard is hidden within the boat and an outboard is 100% visible. The main difference between an inboard and an outboard engine is their placement in the boat. ![]() What is the Difference Between Inboard and Outboard Motors? One downside to an outboard engine is that they are loud and create larger wakes, which can be problematic if you use your boat for watersports like skiing. Outboard motors are more common in boating because they are slightly less expensive, allow more flexibility, more seating capacity, and are easier to maintain. This means the entire engine unit moves and acts as a rudder. The outboard engine steers the boat itself by moving left or right. It can also help with winterizing a boat. This is a nice feature if you want to remove the engine from saltwater to decrease erosion or if you need to avoid obstacles in shallow waters. Outboard engines can be fully removed from the boat for storage or lifted up so they do not touch the water. They can be operated by hand in smaller boats or connected to a steering and power system (similar to the look and feel of a car) in larger boats. This type of engine is advantageous because the propeller actually steers the boat itself and you can lift it up to avoid shallow water or obstacles.Īn outboard engine is a boat propulsion system that delivers power to a boat via an engine mounted on the outside hull of a boat. An I/O engine is considered a mix of an inboard and an outboard because the engine is inside, but the propeller/rudder is outside. In a true inboard, the propeller is in a fixed position and cannot go up or down.įor a boat with an I/O engine, the engine will be placed towards the back of the boat (still fully concealed), but the propeller part of the engine will stick out. Instead, there is a separate rudder, which controls the steering. When a boat has a true inboard engine, the engine will be placed in the center of the boat (inside the boat) and have a driveshaft connected to a propeller, which will give the boat power. I/O engines are more practical for families or boats that want more flexibility. True inboard motors will be found on boats designed for skiing as they produce less wake and drive much smoother. A true inboard is fully inside a boat and an I/O has components within and outside of the boat. There is a distinction between a true inboard engine and an inboard/outboard engine we need to discuss. The inboard engine is connected to a driveshaft, which controls the direction of the propeller, steering the boat. Īn inboard engine, sometimes referred to as an inboard motor or as sterndrive, is a boat propulsion mechanism that sits inside the hull of the boat permanently. If you are not quite ready to talk about engines but are interested in learning more about boating and what types of boats are out there, take a look at our Guide to Buying a Boat and when you’re ready to buy a boat, check out our guide to how much a boat costs. In this article, we are going to discuss more about what inboard and outboard engines are, the pros and cons of each type of engine, and how much they cost on average. When selecting an engine, there is one important choice you need to make first: inboard or outboard? The difference is actually within the words an inboard engine sits within the structure of the boat and is not visible whereas the outboard engine sits outside the structure of the boat and is clearly visible at all times. It also means you have some room for customization and can choose exactly which engine you want. It means you need to budget above the MSRP of the boat and plan to pay more for an engine (or two). Boats are almost always sold without the engine. If buying a boat is on your radar, one question you will need to answer is the type of engine you want. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Voodoopad examples![]() I’ve been using Flying Meat’s VoodooPad Pro as my design and debugging notebook for years and years. But for debugging, I like having more than just a simple plain text log. Since then I’ve also kept logs of day to day work life, which have come in handy during annual review time. The most interesting things are the first question “Good Lord, where to start?”, and the colored annotations (hot pink for interesting data, orange for crude hyperlinks to other pages.) I had a really nice set of colored pens. Here I’m tracking down some speed issues that happened on certain classes of HP machines. This is from March of 1997, working on performance problems in AOLserver, a high throughput threaded webserver that powered most of AOL’s web content at the time. Back in the day, I used to use those hardbound notebooks you find in office supply stores: It’s also really nice to have when you go talk to a colleague and they ask “ok, what have you tried so far?” But in light of fresh evidence, it becomes the key that unlocks the problem and points to a fix. You might have jotted down something yesterday or the day before, which at the time didn’t mean much. With the log you’re building a record, a stream of evidence about the bug. These are the kinds of bugs I start keeping a log of what I do. My first professional bug took a full month to track down. The fact is, you know it might be an hour or two. Maybe it’s one you know is going to be tough to track down because of threading. Uh… I’m not sure how to even start approaching this problem.” These are the bugs where you know you’re in for a long haul. The other class of bug is of the form “whoa. These are my favorite kind of bugs because they’re over and done with quickly, I can get a quick hit of that “you done did good” glow from making a software system better, and then move on to some more interesting problem. The steps are pretty easy: Figure out how to reproduce it. The first is of the form “I think I know where this is” which won’t take long to find. I usually encounter two classes of bugs on a regular basis. 6/11/2023 0 Comments Espresso vs expresso![]() So, you’ll have to purchase one separately if you want to make specialty drinks, like lattes. On the other hand, Nespresso pods are going to create a significantly higher recurring cost than buying whole beans to grind yourself.Īlso, while more espresso machines come with a frothing mechanism, Nespresso machines often don’t. If you’re using pre-ground with an espresso machine, you might as well save yourself the trouble and get a Nespresso machine because the flavor will be about the same. Espresso machines, unless you put out some big bucks for a bean-to-cup machine, generally require you to buy your own grinder. You should also consider the outside costs. However, a decent semi-automatic or fully/super automatic machine may be anywhere from $100 to well over $1,000. Most of them fall under $200, though a couple do go over $500. The machines themselves tend to run a tad cheaper than your average espresso machine. When it comes to the price rag, Nespresso will probably win the heart of your wallet. However, if you are purely convenience driven, and don’t mind sacrificing a bit of flavor to save yourself the effort of grinding, tamping, adjusting pull time, etc., Nespresso should do just fine. Not quite as tedious as manuals, these machines give you a nice balance between customization and convenience. ![]() If you are into flexibility and experimentation with your espresso, opting for a semi-automatic machine is likely the best option. The lack of customization options on a Nespresso machine will likely frustrate you. So, while operation is pretty much dummy-proof, it’s not ideal for an experienced coffee enthusiast. On that line of thought, Nespresso is more consistent, yes, but it is also less customizable. In fact, they can actually turn out pretty poorly if you don’t know what you’re doing. Whether it’s the grind size or timing or just a fluke, because the human element is more involved these shots tend to not be as consistent. However, there is a much larger margin for error when using an espresso machine. Nespresso, on the other hand will give you a decent shot, but it will likely be less intense, and the flavors may be a little muddied. In this case, your traditional espresso will come out on top with rich, full-bodied, and defined flavors. First, we’re comparing a typical shot pulled from proper use of a Nespresso machine and a shot pulled using fresh, properly ground beans by a person who knows what they’re doing. The answer isn’t exactly a straight yes or no, unfortunately. This tan/brown foam is a coveted staple of the espresso community, even though it contributes relatively little to the drink’s flavor. The brewing process usually causes a crema to form at the top of the espresso (though results vary depending on technique, type of beans, machine used, and various other factors). These machines generally require some manual input or supervision. Unless you invest big bucks in getting a super-automatic machine, chances are you’ll have to contend with a serious learning curve to pull a good shot. These machines work by producing steam, pressurizing it, and forcing the hot water and vapor through a puck of finely ground coffee. Like Free Coffee? Kang says it’s always this way when you finish a case, with a heaviness in the heart, as Ki and Yeh nod agreement. My heart is in my throat as Jae-hee makes a run for the door, but Mu-gak manages to get there in time and stops him by firing a shot into the ceiling. Jae-hee stops long enough to grab a stash of money and a duffel bag, which he stuffs with his death books, obviously having prepared for the possibility of needing a quick escape. It’s a race between the two men, as Mu-gak tries to get to the main house before Jae-hee can escape. Mu-gak points his gun at a defiant Jae-hee on the other side of the glass, and Jae-hee glares for a long moment before turning and bolting for the elevator. Mu-gak and Detective Yeh break into Jae-hee’s underground holding cell just as Lieutenant Yeom collapses, as Jae-hee watches with mild, almost casual interest. There’s one more shock in store for our happy couple, that could end up tearing them apart forever.
